Welcome to another behind-the-scenes look at Treasure Island, the cinematic audio drama from OutWrd. In Episode 6, Dogs and Murderers, we reach a critical turning point in the story, one where mutiny meets justice, alliances are shattered, and the playing field is violently reset. In this deep dive, we’ll explore the creative decisions behind Silver’s black spot trial, Flint’s brutal strategy to eliminate his own crew, and Jim Hawkins' transformation from boy to killer.
Silver on Trial: The Black Spot Returns
At the heart of this episode is John Silver’s trial — a moment we always intended to treat with weight. The pirates, once loyal to Silver, now turn on him in true mutinous fashion. Echoing the fate of Billy Bones back in England, Silver is handed the infamous black spot; a sentence of death in pirate lore.
We saw this scene as an opportunity to showcase Silver’s brilliance in manipulation. Rather than fight with force, he plays the long game. He knows the one thing pirates will never resist is rum. His escape, as always, would come not through violence, but through strategy.
Poisoned Rum: Flint’s Ruthless Legacy
The entire episode was constructed around a key question we asked early in development: How could Captain Flint kill so many men on the island and survive?

We knew from the outset that Flint didn’t simply hide the treasure — he engineered its secrecy. He brought a crew he intended to kill (the Sparrowhawk men), but the logistics of executing such a massacre had to make sense. A drawn-out hunt across the island felt too risky, too inefficient for a man like Flint.
The solution came through Silver. As the ship’s cook, Silver had knowledge of food stores, and we landed on a chillingly efficient idea: Flint poisoned the rum. It was the one thing he could count on every pirate to consume. Thus, the legend of the poisoned stash was born — a narrative device that allowed us to tie together past and present timelines.
Foreshadowing and Flashbacks: Sowing the Seeds
With the poisoned rum at the story’s core, we carefully threaded clues throughout the episode. In flashbacks aboard the Walrus, we see a young Ben Gunn witness the execution of the Sparrowhawk crew whilst Silver mutters a key line: “bad rum.”
Silver, ever the tactician, doesn’t simply offer the rum. He uses reverse psychology to convince Morgan and the others that it’s their idea to celebrate, a subtle push that leads them straight to their deaths.
By the episode’s end, the mutineers are gone. No sword fights. No gun battles. Just a slow, inevitable death by their own vices — the perfect end to a chapter built on betrayal.
A Bloodied Ship: Jim’s First Kill
While Silver deals with the mutineers on land, we return to the Hispaniola, where the remaining pirate threats must also be resolved. In Stevenson’s original novel, Jim finds Israel Hands and O’Brien already mortally wounded from in-fighting. We expanded this scene to include more of the mutineers O’Brien escorted back aboard earlier.
Here, Jim Hawkins takes his first life. It’s a pivotal moment and one that forces him to grow up fast. As Hands falls into the sea, Jim is reborn. Hardened. Changed. This newfound confidence leads him to make a bold choice: instead of reuniting with his friends, he decides to save Silver — the same man he once feared and distrusted.
Clearing the Decks for the Final Act
Dogs and Murderers is, at its core, about clearing the narrative decks. By the episode’s end, every lingering pirate threat, both on the island and on the ship, has been dealt with. The story now narrows its focus to the central characters: Jim, Silver, and a handful of survivors.
With the mutiny behind them, the path ahead is clear. What remains is the treasure… or the hope of getting home alive.
Coming Up Next on Behind the Scenes: Episode 7 – Silver & Blood
As we move into the penultimate chapter, the power dynamics shift once again. Can Silver be trusted? Will Jim stay loyal to the man he just saved? And what deadly secrets still lie buried on the island?
Stay tuned for Silver & Blood, only on OutWrd.
